SOMETHING BUZZED near my head, and I reached out to smack it away. My hand landed on my phone, and I pried my eyes open.

I turned the phone on to find a text from James:

Emergency meeting at HQ. Be ready to ship out.

It was a mass text addressed to the entire Sacred Stone Squad. I groaned and sat up in bed, dislodging something heavy that was lying across my abdomen.

Eric’s arm. I sat a little straighter as the morning brain fog cleared, my heart ratcheting around in my chest.

How had I forgotten I was in my boyfriend’s bed right now? This would look so bad when I slunk out of here to get my stuff from my room.

Then Eric opened his eyes, and suddenly nothing else mattered. Not what anyone else thought of me or the teasing that would surely be lobbed my way from Stella’s brothers.

After looking into those sleepy eyes and seeing his half-smile, who could blame me?

“What’s going on?” He ran a hand through his hair, mussing it up even more.

And somehow, he just looked more adorable. And more at peace than he had earlier.

My heart warmed. I did that.

Too bad I had to undo it. “I just got a text from James. Emergency meeting at HQ. He said, prepare to ship out.”

Eric bolted upright and swung his legs over the side of the bed. “I can’t believe they found him already.”

The way he ground out his words and balled up his fists, I knew someone needed an intervention.

I slid my feet into my snuggly slippers and padded around to his side of the bed. “You know you’re not responsible for anything your father does, right?”

I moved both hands to his cheeks, forcing him to look up at me.

His Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed hard, then finally met my gaze. “I know. But it’s still my first reaction to try to stop him.”

“Yeah, I get that.” I moved my arms around his neck, holding him close. “But you’re not in this alone anymore. You have a great team behind you. Including me.”

“Especially you.” The stormy sea on his face softened as his lips crashed into mine.

Doors creaked, and footsteps hurried around his suite and down the hall. Which meant we couldn’t just stand here making out forever.

We broke apart with a groan from Eric and a grumble from me.

“I guess it’s too late to avoid the walk of shame now.” I finger combed through my hair and retied it in a messy bun.

“No shame in being a good girlfriend.” He squeezed my hip and nuzzled my cheek.

I cupped his scruffy jaw as a tingle raced through me. Then I hurried out the door, giving Felicia a head nod as I darted across the hallway.

Some idiot boys said something behind me, but I didn’t have time to care. I scurried into my room and grabbed my gear.

Stella poked her head out of the bathroom door. “How’s Eric doing?”

Warmth filled my chest at her kind response. “He’s been better, but he’ll be okay.
